Odalan Festival at Campuhan Temple

Please be advised that an auspicious Odalan Festival is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, 21st March 2018 at the nearby Pura Gunung Lebah, which is also known as the Campuhan Temple.
This sacred Balinese temple dates back to the 8th century and was first founded by a wandering Indian priest who was drawn to the beauty and energy of the area. It is located at the base of a deep gorge where two branches of the Wos River meet. Today the temple is considered a historical site of great spiritual reverence for followers of the Hindu faith.
An odolan refers to a religious festival for a temple to mark the anniversary of its dedication in accordance to the Balinese calendar. This involves a series of colourful ceremonies and symbolic rituals with elaborate offerings of fruits and flowers to appease the gods. A full schedule traditional dance and music performances provides entertainment throughout the entire event.
In the days leading up to the festival, members of the local Balinese community will be busy cleaning and decorating the temple compound. Sacred artefacts will be purified with holy water collected from around the island of Bali. A customary ritual will also be conducted to invite the gods to descend down to earth to witness the proceedings as honoured guests.
On the actual day of the odolan, everyone in attendance will dress in their finest ceremonial attire and come together to pray for peace and prosperity under the instructions of a high caste priest. Sacred mantras will be chanted over a loud speaker system and the festive ambience of the occasion will carry long into the night.
If you are interested in experiencing or taking photos of this unique celebration, please be aware that you will be required to follow a strict set of guidelines before entering the temple compound. This includes wearing the appropriate attire of a sarong and sash as a token of respect.
